Biofouling potential indicators to assess pretreatment and mitigate biofouling in SWRO membranes: A short review

چکیده

Many desalination plants still struggle to control biological fouling in seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems as there are no standard methods monitor this type of fouling. Strategies biofouling SWRO have been proposed such antifouling coating and lowering potential feedwater through pretreatment processes. Measuring the has gained increased interest due its direct link biofouling. Moreover, approach can be used an early warning system allowing for taking corrective actions processes meet required quality. This article presents methods/tools developed seawater, their applications assess raw feedwater, how these employed membrane systems. The reported removal efficiency during was found low moderate. Threshold values limitation were then based on several lab plant studies. Research provided insight into performance optimisation control. Future research is anticipated determine better identify robust threshold mitigating membranes.

Using nanovibrations to monitor biofouling.

The article proposes the use of the mechatronic surface sensor (MSS) to detect surface contamination. This methodology is based on the analysis of the vibration response of the monitored surface. In the present work a comparison between the responses of the MSS to different structural deposits build-up (Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilm--formed under turbulent and laminar flow and a silica deposi...

Short-term adhesion and long-term biofouling testing of polydopamine and poly(ethylene glycol) surface modifications of membranes and feed spacers for biofouling control.

Ultrafiltration, nanofiltration membranes and feed spacers were hydrophilized with polydopamine and polydopamine-g-poly(ethylene glycol) surface coatings. The fouling propensity of modified and unmodified membranes was evaluated by short-term batch protein and bacterial adhesion tests. The fouling propensity of modified and unmodified membranes and spacers was evaluated by continuous biofouling...

SYMPOSIUM Barnacles and Biofouling

Synopsis Biofouling, the attachment and growth of organisms on submerged, man-made surfaces, has plagued ship operators for at least 2500 years. Accumulation of biofouling, including barnacles and other sessile marine invertebrates, increases the frictional resistance of ships’ hulls, resulting in an increase in power and in fuel consumption required to make speed. Scientists and engineers reco...

Biofouling of Water Treatment Membranes: A Review of the Underlying Causes, Monitoring Techniques and Control Measures

Biofouling is a critical issue in membrane water and wastewater treatment as it greatly compromises the efficiency of the treatment processes. It is difficult to control, and significant economic resources have been dedicated to the development of effective biofouling monitoring and control strategies. This paper highlights the underlying causes of membrane biofouling and provides a review on r...

Marine biofouling: a sticky problem.

Organisms that colonise underwater surfaces, such as barnacle larvae and spores of algae, use a diverse array of biological 'glues' to provide both temporary and more permanent adhesion. The practical consequence of colonisation by these organisms is biofouling - something that has plagued mariners for years - causing increased drag and, in extreme cases, corrosion. Might there be a biological ...
